️دار المخطوطات العراقية… ذاكرة العراق المكتوبة
تُعدّ دار المخطوطات العراقية إحدى تشكيلات الهيئة العامة للآثار والتراث التابعة لوزارة الثقافة والسياحة والآثار، وهي المؤسسة المركزية المعنية بحفظ وصيانة التراث المخطوط في العراق. تمثل الدار مكتبة عريقة تضم بين رفوف خزائنها نفائس المخطوطات التاريخية والفقهية والأدبية والعلمية، التي تعود لكبار المؤلفين والمؤرخين والعلماء والأدباء، وتشكل رصيداً معرفياً لا يُقدَّر بثمن.
تشغل الدار حالياً أحد أجمل البيوتات التراثية في شارع حيفا، وهو البيت الذي كان يسكنه توفيق السويدي، رئيس وزراء العراق في العهد الملكي، وقد تم اختياره عام 1988 ليكون مقراً لكنوز المخطوطات العراقية. ويعود بدء جمع المخطوطات إلى عام 1940 بعد صدور قانون الآثار رقم (59) لسنة 1936، ثم تأسست دار المخطوطات رسمياً عام 1961 عندما نُقلت المجموعات من بناية المتحف العراقي إلى المدرسة المستنصرية، قبل أن تستقر في موقعها الحالي.
تضم الدار اليوم ما يقارب (47,000) مخطوط، في ازدياد مستمر نتيجة تنامي وعي المواطن العراقي بأهمية الحفاظ على هذا الإرث الحضاري. وقد جُمعت هذه النفائس من خزائن ومكتبات وشخصيات وعائلات عراقية معروفة اجتماعياً وتاريخياً، مثل خزانة رشيد عالي الكيلاني، والخزانة العمرية، والآلوسية، وخزانة عباس العزاوي، وعبدالله السنوي، والسهروردي، وهاشم الآلوسي، وأحمد نيازي، والدكتور حسين علي محفوظ، والأب أنستاس ماري الكرملي، فضلاً عن مجموعة متميزة من اللوحات والرقع الخطية لمشاهير الخطاطين.
تتألف الدار من عدة أقسام تخصصية تشمل: قسم الفهرسة، قسم الخزانة، قسم الحيازة، قسم الصيانة والترميم، وقسم التصوير والأرشفة، وتضطلع بمجموعة من المهام الأساسية، أبرزها جمع المخطوطات وحفظها بطرائق علمية، والتعريف بها من خلال إصدار الفهارس، وصيانتها وترميمها، وتصويرها بأحدث التقنيات وخزنها إلكترونياً لتكون في متناول الباحثين، إضافة إلى إقامة المعارض، ومتابعة المخطوطات المسجلة حيازة في المكتبات الخاصة والعامة، وبناء علاقات ثقافية مع مراكز المخطوطات داخل العراق وخارجه، فضلاً عن إعداد كوادر متخصصة في مجالات الفهرسة والصيانة والتصوير.
وتبقى دار المخطوطات العراقية شاهداً حياً على عظمة الإرث العلمي والثقافي العراقي، وحلقة وصل بين الماضي والحاضر، تسعى للحفاظ على ذاكرة الوطن المكتوبة ونقلها بأمانة إلى الأجيال القادمة.
The Iraqi Manuscripts House… Iraq’s Written Memory
The Iraqi Manuscripts House is one of the formations of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage, affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Antiquities. It serves as Iraq’s central institution dedicated to preserving and safeguarding manuscript heritage. The House is a distinguished library that holds invaluable historical, juristic, literary, and scientific manuscripts authored by prominent scholars, historians, writers, and intellectuals, representing an irreplaceable cultural legacy.
Today, the House is located in one of Baghdad’s most beautiful heritage residences on Haifa Street—the former home of Tawfiq Al-Suwaidi, Prime Minister of Iraq during the monarchy. In 1988, this building was selected, along with two others, to host Iraq’s manuscript treasures. The collection of manuscripts began in 1940 following the issuance of the Antiquities Law No. 59 of 1936. The Iraqi Manuscripts House was officially established in 1961, when manuscripts were transferred from the Iraqi Museum to Al-Mustansiriya School, before finally settling in their current headquarters.
The House now preserves approximately 47,000 manuscripts, a number that continues to grow thanks to increasing public awareness of the importance of protecting this precious heritage. These collections were gathered from renowned Iraqi libraries, families, and figures of historical and social significance, including the collections of Rashid Ali Al-Kaylani, Al-Umariyya, Al-Alousi, Abbas Al-Azzawi, Abdullah Al-Sanawi, Al-Suhrawardi, Hashim Al-Alousi, Ahmed Niyazi, Dr. Hussein Ali Mahfouz, and Father Anastas Mari Al-Karmali, in addition to valuable calligraphic panels by celebrated calligraphers.
The Iraqi Manuscripts House comprises several specialized departments: Cataloguing,  (Repository), Acquisition, Conservation and Restoration, and Imaging and Archiving. Its core responsibilities include collecting and scientifically preserving manuscripts, producing catalogues, conserving and restoring materials, digitizing manuscripts using advanced technologies to make them accessible to researchers, organizing exhibitions, monitoring registered manuscripts in public and private libraries across Iraq, fostering cultural cooperation with manuscript centers locally and internationally, and training professional staff in cataloguing, conservation, and imaging.
The Iraqi Manuscripts House remains a living testament to Iraq’s rich intellectual and cultural heritage, serving as a bridge between past and present, and striving to safeguard the nation’s written memory for future generations.
